Help My Dear Friend Rhat and His Family Survive the Crisis in Cambodia

I’m creating this GoFundMe to support a dear friend, Rhat, and his family in Cambodia, who are currently living through extreme hardship and fear due to escalating violence and air raids near the Cambodia–Thailand border.

This is not a distant news story to me. This is someone I care about deeply—someone whose life has been defined by resilience, generosity, and a commitment to paying forward the opportunities he was once given. Overnight, his life and safety have been thrown into uncertainty, and now he needs support.

Who Rhat Is and Why His Story Matters
Rhat’s work has allowed thousands of people—locals and visitors alike—to experience the history, resilience, and hard-earned lessons of Cambodia. Through his work, he has not only helped others understand Cambodia’s past, but he has used the income he earned to pay it forward in one of the most tangible, life-changing ways imaginable.

As a young child, Rhat was given a rare opportunity: he was able to attend school many, many miles away. In Cambodia, especially in rural areas, schools—if they exist at all—are often far from villages, separated by mine fields, unsafe paths, and busy roads. For many children, the only way to attend school safely is by bicycle.

Rhat did not have one.

One day, a neighbor child received a bicycle. Rhat made a deal: he would pedal if the other boy would ride on the back, so that they could both go to school. Together, they made the long, dangerous journey—day after day.
That simple act changed Rhat’s life.

It left an indelible mark on him—one that shaped everything he would later do.

How He Paid It Forward
As an adult, Rhat dedicated himself to restoring bicycles and delivering them to school villages, enabling children to attend school safely—just as he once had. Over the years, he has helped deliver thousands of bicycles, opening doors to education for children who otherwise would not have had access.

For Rhat, safety, access, and opportunity are not abstract ideas. They are lived truths. Every bicycle represents a child’s chance at a different future.

His work has always rippled outward—from that first shared bicycle in childhood, to entire communities gaining access to education.
What Life Is Normally Like for Him and His Community

Under normal circumstances, life in Cambodia—especially for people like Rhat—is humble but steady. Families rely on daily work, small farming, market trade, and informal jobs. People don’t have much margin, but they have routine, dignity, and community.
Rhat and his family depend on predictable days: being able to travel safely, earn a living, buy food, and care for one another. Like many Cambodians, they live close to the edge financially, but peace and stability make survival possible.
That fragile normalcy is now gone.

What Is Happening Right Now
Since early December 2025, fighting between Cambodia and Thailand has escalated dramatically along the border. Air raids and military attacks are actively occurring, and civilians are caught in the middle.

Rhat and his family are living with:
The constant fear of bombing and shelling
Sudden displacement and instability
Loss of income and access to basic necessities
Deep anxiety about safety, food, and medical care
The same safety and stability Rhat has spent his life trying to create for others has now been taken from him.

Why This Is So Devastating—and Why I’m Asking for Help
For families who already live day-to-day, conflict doesn’t just make life harder—it breaks the systems that keep them alive.
Rhat can’t safely work. His family can’t move freely. Markets are disrupted. Clinics are overwhelmed or unreachable. Even a small emergency now carries serious risk.

After a lifetime of giving—after ensuring that other children could travel safely, learn, and dream—Rhat now needs support to protect his own safety and the security of his family.

How Your Support Helps
Funds raised will go directly toward supporting Rhat and his family with:
Food and clean drinking water
Emergency shelter and basic supplies
Medical care and medications
Support during displacement and recovery
Every contribution helps sustain the life of someone who has spent his own life lifting others.
Please consider donating or sharing this fundraiser. Supporting Rhat is not just helping one family—it is honoring a lifetime of compassion, courage, and generosity.

Thank you for standing with him now, when he needs it most.
