Rex’s journey began at the start of last year when he started complaining of pain in his lower back. After several doctor visits and a couple of different diagnoses, a scan revealed a tumor pressing against his spine. Rex was only three years old at the time. He underwent surgery at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City the week before Easter. Unfortunately, due to the position of the tumor, the surgeons couldn’t remove all of it, and Rex was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called ALK positive histiocytic disorder.

Rex started with oral chemotherapy, then had a port surgically implanted to receive IV chemo infusions. His treatment began in June 2025 and is expected to continue through June 2026. He just finished his seventh cycle of chemo in early December and will soon have another MRI and PET scan to check his progress. These scans are both expensive and risky, as Rex must be sedated for each one. Insurance only covers so much, and the financial impact on Rex’s family has been tremendous.

In the midst of this, Rex’s mom suffered a serious leg injury that required surgery and weeks of recovery, making it even harder for the family. His dad, a small business owner, has stepped in to help with treatments, and both sets of grandparents have provided loving support. Despite these challenges, the family has experienced moments of kindness and hope. Rex’s journey might be a long one, but we are hopeful.
