Hello, our names are Philip Hong, Byungchul Sung, and Joseph Sung, and we are currently serving as pastors at United Methodist Churches in Richmond, Yorktown, and Petersburg, VA.

Today, we come to you seeking support for our dear friend, brother in Christ, and fellow pastor, Rev. Sung-Woon Yoo, and his family. For the past 17 years, Pastor Yoo has faithfully and humbly served numerous congregations throughout the state of Virginia.

On Good Friday of 2025, Pastor Yoo, who currently leads the Palmyra United Methodist Church in Palmyra, VA, received a heartbreaking diagnosis—stage four lung cancer. The news has deeply impacted everyone who knows him and has been touched by his ministry. The cancer has aggressively spread throughout his lungs and lymph nodes. Surgery is not an option at this stage, and his only treatment path now is ongoing infusion therapy.

He began his treatment at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, VA, on May 21st and will continue to receive infusions every three weeks. Due to the advanced nature of his illness, doctors estimate that Pastor Yoo may have only 1 to 2 years left.

Pastor Yoo is a devoted husband to his wife, Hyesun, a loving father to their two sons, and a compassionate shepherd to every congregation he has served in Lawrenceville, Rustburg, Covington, and now in Palmyra. Beyond his pastoral duties, he has been a mentor and source of encouragement to many fellow pastors. His deep compassion and tireless support for others flow from a heart that is truly shaped for service—a special gift God has given him to bless the Church and its people.

Now, in this season of profound challenge, we are humbly asking for your help. Any amount you can give will go directly toward ensuring Pastor Yoo receives the care he needs without the added burden of financial stress for his family.
