Reshma has been married to Dr Khan for 16 years. Dr. Khan is a general and bariatric surgeon. They are both from India and are parents to two children. The family lived in Maryland for 10 years while Dr. Khan did his residency and first began his work as a surgeon. They then moved to Quincy, Illinois in 2017 where Dr. Khan worked for Blessing Hospital. During Thanksgiving of 2018, Reshma and Dr. Khan went to India to visit their families. While in India, Dr Khan abandoned Reshma. He then confiscated her visa and passport and blocked all her bankcards, leaving her penniless. Dr. Khan also blocked Reshma from any communication with her children. After returning to the US, Dr. Khan sent text and audio messages to Reshma, saying Talaq, which means divorce in Islamic law. Reshma was unable to return to Quincy for several months. With help from Dr. Zakiah Ali and other community members in Quincy, Congressman Darin LaHood, Senator Jill Tracy, her family and government officials from India, Reshma was able to return to Quincy. After several legal hearings. Reshma was awarded temporary custody of the children but there was no financial settlement. She has been awarded no child support or alimony. She is left with no health insurance, and her immigration attorney's fees are due. Dr. Khan has left Quincy but has not disclosed his whereabouts. At this time, Reshma has no means of supporting herself and children. In spite of the fact that Reshma has degrees in finance and accounting, due to immigration laws, she will be unable to work for two to three years. We are asking for financial contributions to help this wonderful woman support herself and children until there’s a legal resolution, which may take years. Any amount would be appreciated.
