Reina’s Story: A Smile That Deserves to Shine Again

When Reina was just 13 years old, her mother took her to the dentist to have “gold” crowns placed on her front teeth. But something went terribly wrong. Reina believes that instead of real gold, the dentist used bronze, triggering a severe allergic reaction and a serious infection in her four upper front teeth.

Not long after, Reina’s mother passed away. Her father remarried, and when they noticed the infection worsening, they took her to another dentist. The diagnosis was clear: the four damaged teeth needed to be removed, the infected area required deep cleaning, and afterward she would need a bridge to restore her smile.

But her father and stepmother refused to pay for the treatment.

Instead, they gave Reina two heartbreaking choices:

endure the pain, or have all of her teeth removed.

At only 15 years old, Reina faced an impossible decision. Eventually, all of her teeth were extracted, and she was given a full denture. That denture —the same one she uses today— is now 23 years old. It is worn, cracked in several places, and often needs to be held together with dental adhesive just so she can get through the day.

Reina does not have the financial means to replace it or pursue the treatment she truly needs.

Why We’re Creating This GoFundMe

Because we want to give Reina something she was denied as a child:

the chance to smile without fear, without pain, and without shame.

Our immediate goal is to help her receive a new, properly fitted prosthesis. And in the future, we hope to help her access dental implants, so that the 15-year-old girl inside her —the one who was forced into a life-changing choice— can finally smile with confidence again.

Every contribution, big or small, brings us one step closer to transforming Reina’s life.

La historia de Reina: una sonrisa que merece volver a brillar

Cuando Reina tenía apenas 13 años, su madre la llevó al dentista para colocarle coronas “de oro” en sus dientes. Pero algo salió mal. Ella cree que, en lugar de oro, le colocaron bronce, lo que le provocó una fuerte reacción alérgica y una infección grave en sus cuatro dientes anteriores.

Poco después, la madre de Reina falleció. Su padre volvió a casarse, y al notar la infección decidieron llevarla nuevamente al dentista. Allí les dijeron claramente lo que debía hacerse: extraer los cuatro dientes afectados, limpiar profundamente la zona, y luego colocar un puente dental.

Pero su padre y su madrastra se negaron a cubrir los costos de ese tratamiento.

En lugar de ayudarla, le dieron dos opciones crueles:

aguantar el dolor, o extraerse todos los dientes.

Con solo 15 años, Reina tuvo que enfrentarse a esa decisión. Finalmente, le fueron extraídos todossus dientes, y le colocaron una prótesis total. Esa prótesis —la misma que todavía usa hoy— ya tiene 23 años. Está desgastada, ha sufrido múltiples fracturas y, muchas veces, Reina debe usar pegamento para poder mantenerla en su lugar.

Reina no tiene los recursos para costear una prótesis nueva, y mucho menos para solucionar de manera definitiva su condición.

¿Por qué hacemos este GoFundMe?

Porque queremos regalarle a Reina algo que le negaron cuando era niña:

la oportunidad de sonreír sin miedo, sin dolor y sin vergüenza.

Nuestro objetivo inmediato es ayudarla a obtener una prótesis nueva y funcional. Y, a largo plazo, soñamos con que pueda acceder a implantes dentales, para que esa niña de 15 años —que aprendió demasiado pronto lo que era el abandono— pueda volver a sonreír con verdadera confianza.
