Support Refugees from Ukraine in Moldova

***3/25/22 Update: Nearly 400,000 refugees from Ukraine have entered Moldova in the past month.  Some international aid is now coming through to local districts. This aid may cover the costs of shelters, of which there are over 100 throughout Moldova.  The vast majority of refugees continue to be hosted in Moldovans' homes though.  As time passes and expenses add up the financial burden on host families is growing.  A significant portion of the funds raised from this gofundme campaign will go toward providing financial assistance to the approximately 75 families in the Glodeni district hosting refugees from Ukraine. ***

Moldova, a small country (size of Maryland with a population of 2.6 million) situated between Ukraine and Romania, is one of the poorest in Europe. In the past few weeks, over 300,0000 refugees from Ukraine have poured into Moldova, with many more anticipated.  It is estimated that refugees now represent close to 4% of the country's population and that 1 in 8 children are refugees. Moldova has taken in more refugees per capita than any other country. This is a vast number for such a small country to suddenly absorb.

The Glodeni District, where I grew up and my mother and many close relatives live, is located in northwest Moldova, along the border with Romania. What initially started as a trickle became a full flow of refugees. Shelters for refugees in Chisinau, Moldova's capital, are at capacity, and refugees are being sent to districts throughout Moldova, including Glodeni. The refugees streaming in fall into two general categories: 1) Those who have more resources and own cars and are passing through on their way to countries beyond. 2) Those who arrived at the Moldovan border on foot and have nowhere to go. Those in the latter group may be staying for much longer.

A committee has been formed at the district level (through the family assistance and protection department) to support the refugees, most of whom are women and children. The committee provides meals, clothes, bedding, legal and medical services, and more. Local families have been taking in many refugees, and the committee has set up a shelter with a capacity for 100 refugees. The refugee crisis is compounded by the increased cost of food and heating this winter. While other countries have pledged to support refugee relief efforts in Moldova, actual funds have yet to trickle down to the district level, and the need is immediate and growing by the day. Local residents and groups have been "passing the hat" to collect funds to cover costs; however, additional support is urgently needed. Hosting a refugee at the shelter costs $15/day (x 100= $1500).  We invite you to help cover these and other urgent refugee-related expenses.

The Moldovan people are doing all they can to help their neighbors from Ukraine, but they can't keep this up without outside support. Thank you for any level of donation you can provide.

Note: We will be wiring all funds raised directly to the committee overseeing refugee relief efforts in the Glodeni District of Moldova and posting updates about how the funds are used. The above photo is of a family staying at the shelter in Glodeni. Faces are blurred to protect anonymity.
