Support Reed Smith's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Reed Smith is a man who has always been full of life and passion. Whether boating, cycling, racing, or running, Reed’s love for activity and adventure was something he shared with his kids and grandkids. Reed and LaFawn have lived their lives giving back to their community, volunteering their time and talents to those in the community, opening their home to those looking to get back on their feet. Reed and his wife, LaFawn, supported Aloha Youth Football for over 20 years, hosting weekly team dinners, running fundraisers, and volunteering at games. Their kindness and generosity have touched the hearts of many, and left a lasting mark on everyone who’s had the privilege to know them.

But on March 18, 2024, Reed’s life was forever changed.

Just four minutes into his first ride of the season, Reed was hit head-on by a drunk and narcotically impaired driver. What followed was a nightmare of unimaginable proportions. Reed was rushed to OHSU, where he endured multiple life-saving surgeries. The damage was severe:

Broken fibula
Severed ear, requiring reattachment
Severe damage to his carotid artery
Broken pelvis
Broken lower jaw, requiring wiring
Left broken wrist
Left shattered elbow, requiring halo pins
Left forearm was de-gloved
Hematoma on C4
6cm occipital brain bleed
Stitches in his mouth, face, arm, and leg
Injuries to his right hand
Mini strokes affecting vision and cognitive function
A traumatic brain injury (TBI)
Hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke (three strokes in total)
Severe damage to the brachial plexus nerve
Severe torticollis and whiplash

In the aftermath of this horrific accident, Reed has had to relearn the basics of life. From sitting up to feeding himself, regaining core strength to even attempting to walk again, each step has been a monumental challenge. And despite months of surgeries and rehab at various institutions, including RIO, Reed came home on July 9th in a motorized wheelchair, determined to reclaim some semblance of his former self.

Yet the road ahead is long and uncertain. Reed’s left arm is likely to be amputated due to the severity of the damage. He continues to face daily appointments for physical therapy, pain management, and consultations with his medical team to determine the full extent of his injuries.

For Reed and LaFawn, this journey has not only been physically and emotionally draining but also financially devastating. They’ve already spent tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket on therapies, devices, and treatments not covered by insurance making up a portion of the Million Dollar + in medical bills—and this amount will only continue to grow. Reed’s future will require lifelong care, therapy, and ongoing medical treatments, including modifications to their home and vehicle to accommodate Reed’s new needs.

This GoFundMe is not just a call for help—it’s a plea for support for the Smith family as they navigate this overwhelming financial burden. The medical expenses are insurmountable, and they will only increase as Reed continues his journey to recovery. Your generosity will make a difference in their ability to continue receiving the care and support Reed needs.

We also ask that you take this opportunity to reflect on the choices we all make behind the wheel. The impact of a decision to drive under the influence can be catastrophic. Reed’s life, and the lives of those who love him, have been permanently altered. Please, think before you drive.

We are so grateful for any support you can provide, whether it be through a donation or simply sharing this story. Every little bit helps, and together, we can give Reed and his family a chance at rebuilding their lives.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
