Support Recovery from Heart Attack at 39 for James Kim

Recovery from a heart attack at 39.

I really didn’t want to start this GoFundMe, but I keep hearing God telling me to start one, so just obeying.

The longest and scariest 3 days of my life actually started on Fri 11/14/25 at 4am.

I woke up to a painful burning and squeezing sensation in both my lungs.

I thought it was due to my asthma and acid reflux acting up at the same time.

Spoke to an urgent care doctor over the phone, and she prescribed me steroids for the asthma and meds for my acid reflux.

The meds helped me, and I started to feel better over the weekend until Sun 11/16/25 around 5pm.

I was actually working, and the burning/squeezing sensation in my lungs started hurting even more.

I thought it was the acid reflux and asthma along with the flu-like symptoms I was fighting that I got from my wife, who got sick from the special needs kids she works with at an elementary school.

Picked up some Theraflu and arrived home around 8:30pm.

First, took some meds for the acid reflux, waited about an hour, had a small bite to eat, took Theraflu, and tried to go to sleep.

Around 11pm, the pain in my lungs was the most painful burning and squeezing sensation I had ever felt, along with sweating like crazy.

Decided to check myself into the ER in San Dimas, where I arrived at 12am.

No wait time, so they checked me in right away. My BP was over 200/100, and nurses/doctors were very concerned.

Did the usual blood tests and chest X-ray, where the doctor said everything came out fine, and he was going to send me home.

Within 5 mins, he told the nurse if I was still here as my troponin (protein complex in heart and skeletal muscle that is released into the bloodstream when there is muscle damage) level was over 1000 when normal levels are about 100.

Checked my blood again about 2-3 hours later, and it had increased to about 3000.

The doctor transferred me to a larger hospital in Covina, where they specialize in heart treatment, in an ambulance as he was afraid I was going to have a heart attack or already had one.

Arrived around 4am, where my troponin level was now over 5000, and I started to now have chest pains.

Doctors gave me meds to lower my blood pressure and blood thinners along with morphine to help me with the pain.

My body was not used to morphine, so it made me throw up all day on Monday.

A room opened up in the afternoon, so I was admitted and transferred up from the ER.

Did an ECO (ultrasound on my heart), and the tech said my heart was healthy, so I started feeling hopeful that I wasn’t or didn’t have a heart attack.

But the pain continued all day, which meant more morphine, which caused me to throw up all day.

The cardiologist came around 4-5am on Tuesday, reconfirming my heart looked good like the nurse said, but still needed to do a cath lab (noninvasive surgery where they go through my artery on my wrists to my heart) on my heart.

It confirmed I actually did suffer an acute heart attack where 99% of the branch artery on the left side of my heart was clogged, which caused the heart attack.

The cardiologist was able to successfully insert a stent in the artery to unclog it.

He also discovered another partial blockage in the right side of my heart on another branch artery.

He believed that can be unclogged with medication and lifestyle changes, so he held off on putting another stent.

I will need to be on a handful of medications for the next year, and the chances of me now suffering another heart attack are 10-30%.

Which means I won’t be able to work the courier job I was doing to support myself and my wife along with our 2 fur babies.

My wife just started a new job working with special needs kids, and it will not be enough to survive with tons of rent, bills, and debt.

I know everyone is having a tough time financially as the economy has only been getting worse this year as inflation is just continuing to go up.

Again, I hate to ask and be even writing this, but anything will help. If you’re not in a situation where you can contribute, praying and sharing my story will be greatly appreciated.

Just thankful to Jesus that I am still alive and didn’t leave my wife first with a lifelong trauma of waking up to me dead.

He answered my prayer that I couldn’t also do that to my parents and older sister by leaving them first.

It is currently 4am Wed 11/18/25 as I’m writing this because my asthma has kept me up all night again.

Thank you for even taking the time to read my story. I encourage you to not take today for granted as tomorrow is never guaranteed.
