I am Jarrett. My wife at the time, Raven, was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2024. On February 14, 2025, she underwent a lumpectomy and complete lymph node removal and redirecting of the lymph system on her left side. Unfortunately, I got laid off on February 27, 2025, and we lost our insurance. We both mutually felt it would be better to divorce, so we did in July 2025. We remained friends. All was great until September when she was getting out of bed to go to work with no warning of any kind. A vertebra in her middle back fractured. We found out with a CAT scan that cancer had returned in her spine, right hip, and pelvis. Raven was in pain for a couple of weeks. She was able to recover enough to go back to work as a private caregiver. She was doing great until mid-November when her neck started hurting. She said it felt like whiplash. We both thought it might have just been stress or the way she slept. We never dreamed it would actually turn out to be cancer spread to her neck, affecting 4 vertebrae in her neck. Her pain was off and on and continued to worsen over time. After many trips to the ER and her just getting pumped full of pain meds and sent home, we decided that we had to do something different. On January 7, 2026, we decided to go to Houston and chose Memorial Hermann. She bypassed the ER waiting room and was immediately taken back, given pain meds, and made more comfortable. CT scans were done. It was a 19-hour wait in the ER hallway before she was admitted to a room. For the conditions, she received far better and more thorough care in the hallway at Memorial Hermann than she ever did at the ER in Beaumont. While waiting in the room, she was set up for an MRI for her neck and back. She is extremely claustrophobic and was put totally under anesthesia for the MRI that lasted over 4 hours. She was immediately taken from the MRI for emergency tumor removal and spine surgery. 7 vertebrae in the middle of her back were fused together with rods and screws. Unfortunately, the vertebrae in her neck did not have enough density to operate on. The radiation oncologist set her up with 5 targeted turbo radiation treatments on her spine and neck. We were at the hospital for a total of 23 days. Physical therapy showed up on days 21 and 22. She was discharged after her final radiation treatment on the 23rd day. Raven lost 38 lbs in those 23 days along with muscle strength. Her strength is slowly declining as time passes. I am fortunate enough to have a boss who owns the company I work for and is extremely understanding of the situation. He and his son told me to do what I needed to do to take care of Raven. Some days were better than others, and I could work several hours, while others were not so good, and I couldn’t work due to her pain. My boss seemed to know when Raven was having a bad day just by my mood and would tell me to go take care of Raven. "Your job is safe." I was able to work enough to make ends meet and help her out with her bills and keep mine in check for the most part. The first of March, we completed a job, but unfortunately, bidding for more jobs was pushed out, and I was laid off the first of March. Since then, Raven has declined. She was having bad pains in her abdomen along with her back and neck. On April 13, we found ourselves back in the ER. While in the ER, she sat up to move to the edge of the bed to urinate. In the process, her right femur broke near her hip. She was admitted and laid in a hospital bed for 8 days before undergoing hip replacement surgery in her right hip. Not being able to move due to the severe pain of a broken leg took its toll on Raven. She lost more strength, and her leg muscles are so tight that they don’t want to work. We are taking it day by day. I know my story is long-winded. Just being honest about this dreadful journey Raven and I have been on. I am still waiting on my boss to call me and tell me they got some work. I don’t have the heart to leave Raven alone. There are no jobs that would allow me to be here for her. She is scared, as well as myself. Not knowing what is going to happen day to day is the biggest fear either of us has ever faced. Her bills, along with mine, are piling up. I’ve never asked for help before. This unfortunate situation has left me no other options. My heart and compassion won’t allow me to leave her alone at this tough time in her life. She doesn’t deserve to be left alone. For anyone who is able, willing, and can, any help would be greatly appreciated. Please keep Raven and myself in your prayers. And thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to hear Raven's story.
