RANGE Magazine needs your help!

We recently received devastating news that our application for federal journalism funding through the Canada Periodical Fund was denied because our 100% Canadian publication was deemed to contain less than 80% Canadian editorial content by a very small margin.

For a magazine built around amplifying Canadian artists, this is difficult to understand and despite numerous pleas to reconsider our application, we've been told the decision was final and to try again next year.

Since launching five years ago as a national print + online publication, RANGE has made it our mission to champion the voices shaping music and culture across this country and beyond. From emerging artists to more familiar names, our pages have always been dedicated to celebrating Canadian creativity.

Our writers, photographers, illustrators, designers, and production team are Canadian. Our stories regularly spotlight artists from Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, and beyond.

But despite that commitment, we were told that we fell short of the program’s strict Canadian content threshold — and the one funding stream we were truly counting on to sustain our publication in 2026 was denied.

For an independent publication like ours, that funding represents a significant portion of our operating budget.

Without it, the future of RANGE Magazine is uncertain.

Why RANGE Matters

Canada’s music ecosystem is fragile. Our artists compete in a global industry dominated by larger markets like the United States — markets with stronger currencies, larger populations, and deeper media ecosystems supporting their cultural industries.

Independent music journalism plays a crucial role in helping Canadian artists be seen and heard. That’s where RANGE comes in.

Over the past five years we’ve worked to build a platform that introduces readers to new voices, highlights underrepresented artists, and celebrates the diversity of Canada’s music scene.

Every issue, every daily feature, every weekly newsletter that we produce is a labour of love — built by a small team that believes deeply in the importance of documenting and supporting the culture happening around us.

All of our content has always been free, but this model is clearly broken and we need your support.

How You Can Help

We’re asking our readers, artists, and community to help RANGE get through the year.

Your support will help us cover the costs of producing upcoming issues, paying writers and photographers, and continuing to platform Canadian artists who deserve to be heard.

If RANGE has ever introduced you to a new favourite artist, helped you discover a new scene, or simply reminded you why music matters — we hope you’ll consider supporting us.

The Future of RANGE

This year marks five years of RANGE Magazine.

What started as a small independent publication has grown into a national platform covering artists from across Canada and around the world.

We’re not ready to stop now.

With your support, we can continue doing what we set out to do from the beginning: lift up emerging voices, celebrate music culture, and give artists a platform they deserve to tell their stories behind the music.

Thank you for reading, supporting, and believing in independent Canadian music journalism.
