This April, Ramon Rey came home to his children and grandchildren at age 72 after more than seven years in prison. We (Alberta, Kaitlin, and Maggie) have had the privilege of getting to know Mr. Rey throughout the last 13 months while volunteering with the NYU Parole Advocacy student group. We are now raising funds to support Mr. Rey in his transition home.

All the funds raised here will support Mr. Rey's needs for reintegration, particularly his medical care. Less than a month after his release from prison, Mr. Rey was hospitalized due to severe COPD which advanced significantly during his incarceration. Mr. Rey requires round-the-clock oxygen, and often relies on a wheelchair to get around. He hopes to be discharged from the hospital to a housing facility that can provide 24/7 medical assistance. Prior to his hospitalization, Mr. Rey had been living with his daughter and her three children. Your contribution will help to ease the costs of medical treatment, food, clothing and transportation to doctors’ appointments for Mr. Rey and his loved ones.

Through our work with Mr. Rey, we have learned that he has a passion for justice, is deeply funny and an excellent storyteller. He enjoys reading, volunteering with pro-democracy groups, and supporting people in his community. Most of all, he is excited to cherish time with his grandchildren following his release. In addition to sharing the simple pleasures like helping them with their homework, Mr. Rey is making plans to show them around New York City- going to the zoo is at the top of his list!
