Support for Richard Smyth – Rally Official and Rally Fanatic

We’re raising funds to support Richard Smyth, a dedicated rally official who was violently attacked while volunteering at a recent car rally.

From what I understand Richard sustained multiple fractures to his face and eye socket, there is still a chance he will have to have surgery.

Richard will be off work for a minimum of two weeks, if they don't need to operate.

Richard was managing a road closure in the forest at night when some locals attempted to enter the live rally stage – something that would’ve put both them and the competing crews in danger. From what i understand, Richard did what any responsible official would do and tried to stop them – but was met with violence. Thankfully, a few people arrived to spectate and were able to step in before things got even worse.

Richard is one of the quiet legends of our sport. He’s always out there in the elements helping keep rallies running safely, never asking for anything in return. He’s kind, humble, and a true rally fan through and through. I haven’t had much to do with him personally, but every time I’ve spoken to him, he’s been nothing but friendly and supportive – and that seems to be what everyone says about him.

This fundraiser is to help cover costs while Richard recovers and takes time off work. It’s also a way for the rallying community to show that we’ve got his back.

On top of that, I’d love to gather some rally merch to send his way – he’s supported me by buying my merch in the past, so it’d be great for others to chip in if they’re keen. I’m also planning to offer Richard a drive in my standard Hyundai Excel rally car at a Victorian event of his choice. It would be great to offer him a full arrive-and-drive package, including car, crew, entry fee, and licence.

Richard’s done a couple of small events before, but this could be a chance for him to experience a proper state-level rally from the driver’s seat.
