Support Raja Ampat community businesses

Indigenous families in Raja Ampat found a way to preserve one of the richest marine environments on the planet and their livelihoods through ecotourism. Then Covid happened, and they were forced to return to fishing to make ends meet. Now they have a chance to get back on their feet and protect their waters by diversifying into a new sustainable business, and they are so close to making it happen.
COVID has destroyed tourism-dependent village economies in Raja Ampat, and has left local communities with no choice but to return to fishing for survival.
PT Bahari Perjampat Sejahtera (PT PERJAMPAT) is a social enterprise founded by members of the Raja Ampat Homestay Association. PERJAMPAT is striving to provide island communities with sustainable alternatives to the old, exploitative practices that the covid pandemic has forced many people to return to.
PERJAMPAT has developed a new, sustainable business that is already providing incomes to the pilot participants. Unfortunately, the organisation's ability to deliver this lifeline to remote island communities has been blocked by the collapse of its own income stream... while just US $4000 short of the amount needed to make it happen.
Your support will enable PERJAMPAT to continue its work to protect Raja Ampat's incredible marine riches from unsustainable exploitation, and will ensure that local communities have livelihoods that allow them to remain in control of their ancestral lands.
Raising more than our initial target of $4,000 (about £3,000) will enable the enterprise to cover the cost of facilitating individual coconut producer groups, including the equipment they need, and support their campaign to regulate access to their local fishing areas.
Thank you!
NOTE: Because of gofundme does not cover funding appeals based in Indonesia, this fundraiser is being managed on behalf of Mama Engge and PERJAMPAT by:
Dominic Elson - co-founder of Seventythree, a social enterprise that has been supporting Raja Ampat communities since 2012, and will be providing financial oversight of the appeal. More information at https://www.73-ltd.com/seventythree-field-notes-01-redefining-conservation/
