On Wednesday, 11/26, Rachel Lyman underwent open-heart surgery to repair a valve that had become infected and was causing her to be severely ill. We are so grateful to share that the surgery went well and Rachel is now on the long road to recovery. But that road is not only challenging—it is costly.

Rachel’s procedure was highly specialized and complex. In addition to the surgery itself, she spent ten days in the hospital, including time in the ICU, and underwent extensive testing, labs, and imaging both during her stay and at several ER visits beforehand as doctors worked to uncover the cause of her illness. And her medical journey is far from over: there will be many follow-up appointments, treatments, and ongoing care in the months ahead.

These overwhelming medical expenses will place a significant financial strain on the Lyman family. Rachel is unable to work for the foreseeable future, and Greg will continue to need to take time away from work to care for her during recovery.

No family is ever prepared for something like this. And these are the moments when community is so important.
