خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” (Bukhari 5027)
Since 2016, the Institute of Quran Memorization (IQM) has been devoted to planting the love of Allah’s Book in the hearts of young Muslims. Alhamdulillah, over the years IQM has produced many huffadh, some of whom have gone on to:
- Lead Taraweeh prayers in their communities,
- Compete in national Quran competitions,
- Continue their studies with a deep connection to the Quran.
This work is led by Shaykh Zakiuddin Syed, who began teaching Hifz in India in 1995 before moving to the U.S. in 1998. After decades of teaching and serving as an Imam, he founded IQM with the vision of raising a generation of Huffadh who are successful both in deen and dunya; memorizing the Quran while excelling academically and spiritually.
But today, IQM is facing a serious challenge. Like many institutes, the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 had a lasting impact. With families turning to online Quran programs and fewer returning in person, our institute is now at risk of shutting down within the next 60 days unless we raise $40,000.
Unlike online classes, IQM provides:
- A vibrant classroom environment full of peer support and suhbah (Islamic companionship)
- Personalized mentorship and 1-on-1 guidance.
- Holistic, student-centered learning that nurtures both memorization and understanding.
We believe this is what truly preserves the Quran in young hearts: connection, mentorship, and community.
Allah tells us in the Quran:
۞ إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلْفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ وَٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَٱلْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلْغَـٰرِمِينَ وَفِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۖ فَرِيضَةًۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۭ ٦٠
“Alms-tax (sadaqah) is only for the poor and the needy, for those employed to administer it, for those whose hearts are attracted ˹to the faith˺ (al-mu’allafatu qulubuhim), for ˹freeing˺ slaves, for those in debt, for Allah’s cause, and for ˹needy˺ travellers. ˹This is˺ an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.” (Tawbah 9:60)
