Support Psychedelics Madness Awakening Conference

Dear friends, family, and members of the mad, psychedelic, and psychiatric survivor communities:

We are reaching out to seek your help to collect funds for a small, volunteer-run conference  in early 2021 entitled Psychedelics, Madness, & Awakening: Harm Reduction and Future Visions. The funds we are raising in this campaign will be dedicated to a) making the conference accessible with ASL interpretation of live, moderated events and captioning of pre-recorded video presentations and b) honorariums for our speakers and volunteer support team.

The conference is devoted to exploring and re-thinking the complex and contentious relationships between:

1) experiences produced by psychedelics, entheogens and plant medicines,
2) experiences that are labeled as psychosis or madness, and
3) experiences of awakening or spiritual growth.

We are especially highlighting the voices and experiences of those who identify as survivors of psychiatric violence, and we are creating a conversation to envision harm reduction alternatives to forced institutionalization or diagnoses of "madness." The call for presentations is here  and gives a good flavor of the topics we will be addressing.

The conference has no sponsors; the organizers are a group of friends and colleagues who feel this is an important conversation to have and we have not seen it happening anywhere else.

Your support will go towards making the conference more accessible and inclusive in the following ways, in order of priority:

1) $2000 for captioning of fifty 20-minute videos by a team of four volunteers, who will each receive $500 honorariums;

2) $2750 for ASL interpretation for twelve 60-minute and five 90-minute live, moderated conversations;

3) $14750 for honorariums for our 60+ speakers, moderators and volunteer support team, including tech and counselling support for audience members;

4) $500 for small fees for maintaining the website and other logistical expenses for the conference.

Any additional funds raised by this campaign will go towards CART captioning for the live events, as an additional accessibility;

The conference schedule and information about ticket sales will be released in late November 2020. We deeply appreciate your support and hope you will join us at the conference next year!

 With sincere thanks,

The Psychedelics, Madness & Awakening Organizing Team.

Additional Information:

Originally scheduled to be held in the Bay Area in October 2020, the conference was delayed due to COVID, and it will now be held online. The 17 conference panels will be held on successive weekends, beginning in January 2021. For each of the panels, we are currently asking our presenters to create 15-20 minute pre-recorded video submissions, which they will submit to us this November. We will add closed captions to these presentations, and then screen them along with a live, moderated Q&A session between panelists and virtual audience members. Tickets to the conference will be donation based, with a suggested donation of $5-10 per event. No one who wishes to attend the conference will be turned away for lack of funds. After the conference ends, we will create an archive of the videos and recorded conversations that will be publicly accessible online.
