In recent weeks, lawmakers in several US states took deliberate steps in passing bills to end safe & legal abortion. Although the details and restrictions in each of the bills vary by location, the bottom line is that there is a movement underway across a broad region of the Southern US to penalize doctors who perform abortions &/or the people who seek them. We are proud to say that although there are challenges related to access to abortions depending on what region you live in, it is a legal and SAFE procedure in Canada. Furthermore, Canada's procedures around abortion are governed by medical standards, not by political will.

However, as recently as last year, one of Canada's major political parties held a vote at their annual convention to reopen the debate on access to abortion. The vote was narrowly defeated by a margin of under 10 votes. The leader of this party has publicly and proactively courted the pro life movement, regardless of his current promises. With this clear and present threat, we must remain diligent in protecting the rights of women to make their own health choices.

The decision to have an abortion is between a patient and their doctor. At NO point should a politician's opinion enter the doctor's office when a woman (or man, for that matter) walks through the door. Reproductive health is a choice and therefore we think it’s time to have Pro-Choice signs displayed at both entrances to our community.
