On September 9, 2024, my aunt, Polly Castillo, was taken to the hospital for trouble breathing and chest pain. She was found to have fluid in her lungs from pneumonia, and her heart stopped for three minutes in the emergency room. She underwent lifesaving strategies to restart her heart. She was then kept in a medically-induced coma and intubated for approximately three weeks while her lungs healed. During this process, she required a feeding tube and remained intubated with constant monitoring in the ICU. She was finally able to be brought out of the coma and gain consciousness. She remained in the hospital until October 28, 2024. Her right leg and foot suffered what is termed critical illness polyneuropathy. She has had to learn to walk again and regain mobility on a walker and continues to struggle with pain and numbness in her left lower leg and some in her right foot. She still has a stomach feeding tube in place that needs to be removed. She was uninsured at the time of this event but has since gotten insurance through the marketplace. Unable to work, the numerous co-pays for specialists and physical therapy sessions as well as hospital bills make it difficult to keep up financially. She now requires treatment from a PCP, cardiologist, pain management physician, physical therapist, cardiologist, gastroenterologist, and pulmonologist. She is improving daily. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. Anything helps.
