Hello! My name is Poe Ko Ko and I am a college student studying a BA of Communication Arts in Rangsit University, Bangkok. I have received a partial scholarship but still need some more funding to help me continue my education journey and my dreams.

Here is a little bit about me. I was born in Umphiem refugee camp. My parents fled their village due to civil war in Myanmar. When I was just four years old, my father passed away, and later my mother was diagnosed with TB and passed away.

My aunt sent me to Thoo Mweh Khee School in 2016. As an orphan, living away from family and relatives was not easy. I had spent my study with 200-baht pocket money in a year. Despite the hardship I faced, I enjoyed my studies a lot. I loved history, English, and science. I had learnt and gained so much knowledge which I might have not learnt if I still remained studying in Myanmar, the government school. Not only that I have also learnt my own Karen language, culture and Karen history which were not allowed or taught in Myanmar government school. It had widened my knowledge and brightened my future. As an orphan living in this sort of circumstance, I was completely galvanized to work for my community and help others.

After I graduated from Thoo Mweh Khee school, I wanted nothing more but to give a hand back to the community. Passionately, I have taught for 4 years now. I taught English and Biology. I found myself with the greatest joy working with young children. I helped grade ten and students for funding such as doing the recycling and working in the farm on the weekend. I helped students doing their homework at night and be with them as a mentor at dormitory. Every summer, I volunteered teaching English in the remote villages in Myanmar. I cherished helping young people and the villagers for the development of education. All through these experiences, I learnt how to work for the development of education, help young people who need help, and understand the need of the communities. I’ve grown so much and I only want to help and make the community of Myanmar better in the future.

I finished my first year at Rangsit University and I wholeheartedly enjoyed my studies and was fascinated to learn everything. Communication Art offers a variety of writing skills such as creative writing for communication, creative writing for media, report writing and news articles. Writing has always been my sheer passion. Likewise, the course offers digital photography for communication and photography skill which I am very interested in. I could gain the skills of the photography for social media including journalistic photography and photography for public relation, which is very important to learn the norms and etiquette of social media and the communication nowadays. From graduating this course, I can able to work in advertising management, public relations, media planning, news reporting and edition, commentary, TV and radio.

In the future I want to be a writer, author, journalist, photographer and a community worker. To help develop the communities in Myanmar is my first choice because I personally have lived and experienced the poor government management of the villages. In addition, I would like to help young children whose parents cannot afford to send them to school because I want everyone in Myanmar to have education. I believe that education is a key to unlock the dark prison of poverty, corruption, unjust and civil problems. I would like to write my own autobiography, write the stories of marginalized ethnic people, and I want to set a good example for young people as a community worker. I just want to fulfill my mother’s wishes as well as my dream.
