If You Love Placencia, This Is Our Moment to Protect It.

There is something about Placencia that stays with you.

Maybe it's walking the beach at sunrise. Swimming in the warm Caribbean Sea. Spending an afternoon wandering the sidewalk. Heading out to the reef. Sharing a meal with friends. Or simply sitting beneath a palm tree and wondering how one small Belizean village could feel so special.

For those of us who live here, Placencia is home.

For tens of thousands of people around the world, it has become a second home—or simply one of those special places they never forgot.

And today, we're asking everyone who loves Placencia to help us protect it.

Placencia remains beautiful, vibrant and welcoming. Our hotels, restaurants, tour operators and local businesses are open, our beaches continue to be enjoyed, and the warmth and character that have made people fall in love with this village are very much alive.

But our coastline is facing a growing challenge.

Over the past year, Placencia has experienced significant coastal erosion in vulnerable areas, together with increasingly difficult seasonal sargassum events. When large amounts of sargassum reach our shores, removing it quickly and responsibly requires manpower, specialized equipment and resources that are simply beyond the normal means of a small village.

We don't want to simply clean up after each event. We want to become better equipped to manage it.

Our goal is to give Placencia the tools it needs to respond.

That includes exploring and implementing sargassum containment and diversion booms, acquiring or accessing appropriate collection and removal equipment, improving our ability to remove incoming sargassum efficiently, and supporting the labor and logistics necessary to keep affected areas of our shoreline clean and accessible.

At the same time, we must address the erosion affecting portions of the beach itself.

That is why the Placencia Village Council and the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association are working together on a broader effort to protect and restore Placencia's coastline.

And we started with science.

With the assistance of Dr. Ping Wang of the University of South Florida, a comprehensive scientific study of the Placencia coastline has been completed. The work has helped us better understand the forces contributing to our erosion challenges and has provided a science-based path toward beach nourishment and shoreline restoration.

We now know more about the problem. We have a plan for moving forward. And we know what some of the tools are that can make a real difference.

Now we need help putting those tools to work.

What Your Donation Can Help Us Do

Funds raised through this campaign will support practical, on-the-ground efforts to protect Placencia's shoreline, including:

Sargassum booms and containment systems to help intercept and manage incoming sargassum before it accumulates along heavily used sections of shoreline.

Sargassum collection and removal equipment so our community can respond faster and more effectively when significant events occur.

Labor, transportation and removal costs associated with keeping affected beach areas clean.

Beach nourishment and restoration efforts based upon the scientific work already completed.

Continued technical and environmental guidance to ensure that the solutions we pursue are responsible, effective and appropriate for Placencia.

This is not about pretending we can stop sargassum from arriving in the Caribbean or prevent every natural change along our coastline.

It is about being prepared.

It is about giving our village the ability to respond quickly when sargassum arrives, protecting vulnerable portions of our shoreline, and taking practical steps today rather than simply hoping next year will be easier.

Placencia may be a small village, but we have friends all over the world.

Over the years, tens of thousands of people have honeymooned here, brought their families here, fished our waters, explored our reef, eaten lobster on our beach, walked our famous sidewalk and discovered why this little village at the end of the peninsula is so difficult to forget.

Many came as visitors.

Many left feeling like part of Placencia.

Today, we're asking that extended Placencia family to stand with us.

If 10,000 people who love Placencia gave just $25, together we could raise $250,000 to put real equipment and real solutions to work.

Some people will be able to give $10.

And some may be in a position to do considerably more.

Sargassum is seasonal and conditions can vary considerably from one day and one location to another. It does not define Placencia, nor does it change the extraordinary variety of experiences our destination offers.

Come walk our village.

Stay in our hotels and resorts.

Eat in our restaurants.

Visit our islands.

Snorkel and dive our reef.

Fish our waters.

Explore the lagoon, Maya sites, waterfalls, jungle and communities of southern Belize.

And meet the people whose livelihoods and families are connected to this remarkable place.

Visiting Placencia is itself one of the most meaningful ways you can support our community.

We Can Do Something About This.

We cannot control the currents.

We cannot prevent sargassum from forming thousands of miles away.

And we cannot stop every natural force reshaping our coastline.

But that does not mean we are powerless.

We can prepare. We can equip our community. We can restore vulnerable areas. And we can fight for the beach that has given so much to all of us.

We have the science.

We have a village ready to work.

We have a plan.

Now we need the resources to put that plan into action.
