I’m reaching out on behalf of two extraordinary people, PJ and Margie Synenberg, two cherished members of our community who now find themselves in urgent need of support as they face a sudden and overwhelming medical crisis.

Back in March, PJ went in for routine testing in preparation for a hernia surgery. During those initial tests, an abnormal EKG led to a heart catheterization, where doctors discovered he had coronary artery disease and two major blockages — reducing his heart function to just 45%. At only 37 years old, this diagnosis was shocking and completely unexpected.

Because PJ works as a barber and Margie as a hair stylist, both self-employed, they didn’t have health insurance at the time and were forced to delay essential procedures while searching for coverage. In the meantime, medical bills were piling up along with their fear. Thankfully, they were eventually able to secure insurance and PJ received two stents on Tuesday, June 17th, along with medications to support his recovery.

Things appeared to be looking up until a week later, on Tuesday, June 25th, PJ suddenly collapsed at home. He was rushed to the hospital, where he received four staples in the back of his head and was admitted for further cardiac testing. By the next morning, doctors determined his heart function had dropped even further, now at just 35%. He is scheduled to undergo surgery this afternoon (June 26th) to have a pacemaker implanted, and will soon be evaluated by an Advanced Heart Failure team for genetic testing to better understand the cause of his rapidly progressing condition.

This marks the second week both PJ and Margie have been unable to work — and the future remains uncertain as they shift their focus entirely to PJ’s recovery.

PJ and Margie are the kind of people who show up for everyone. They’re loving parents, devoted partners, and dedicated caretakers of two adults with special needs. They take one day off a month to cut hair for members of our community with disabilities, offering care and dignity where it’s needed most. They’re the friends you call when you’re stuck on the side of the road or when you need a good laugh after a hard day. They bring joy to others effortlessly and now, it’s our turn to lift them up.
