Jessica is a nurse I’ve been lucky enough to work with for several years. We first met when our kids started skateboarding together, and over time she became not just a colleague, but a friend. She is one of those people who shows up in the best way, always steady, always kind, and always willing to help both her patients and her coworkers, no matter what’s going on.

I truly admire her.

Last week, her son Phoenix experienced the unimaginable and sudden loss of his father, Steven, who was only 38. My heart is just breaking for them.

Phoenix is the kind of kid you immediately like. There’s something about his kindness and maturity that stands out, and I have no doubt he is going to make a positive impact on the world. He is about to graduate high school and plans to attend ETSU this fall, a huge milestone now made challenging.

As a parent, I can’t imagine navigating something like this at such a pivotal moment in life. I know how difficult losing a parent can be even as an adult. It’s hard to comprehend what this feels like for a young man just stepping into his future.

I want to help make this next chapter just a little less overwhelming.
