“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20
Hi, I'm Phie, and in January 2025 I will be going to Kona, Hawaii to join YWAM (Youth With A Mission) for their Discipleship Training School (DTS). YWAM is one of the largest missions organisations globally, and this course wil allow me to join their impactful movement! I will be running a half marathon to raise funds.
What will my DTS entail?
In general terms, the DTS is a six month programme in which you learn about God and deepen your faith, understanding, and relationship with Him, and then go out into the world to spread His love, joy, and calling for others. My DTS is called "Fire and Fragrance: Least Reached" and will involve:
- Lecture Phase (3 months in Kona): Studying the Bible and exploring themes such as “How to Hear God’s Voice,” “Worship and Intercession,” and “Holy Spirit and His Gifts.” This phase also focuses on developing my relationship both with God and with fellow believers.
- Outreach Phase (2.5 months): Travelling to a nation where the gospel is not widely known. This phase involves teaching the Bible, serving local communities, learning about different cultures, and helping others follow Jesus. My placement will be decided when I am in Kona.
Why do I want to go?
When I decided to do a gap year, I knew I wanted to do something with it that would allow me to help others and develop my faith, which would give me a solid foundation for when I started university. I looked at many different programmes, and eventually landed on YWAM. I then researched lots of different bases, and found that Kona would best fit my wants and needs. I love the Lord and life without Him is worth nothing to me, and I have a deep desire for others to feel the same peace, joy, and security that I know only comes from a relationship with Jesus. I believe that experiencing a different culture during my missions placement will help me become a more compassionate and understanding doctor. I envision my medical career eventually taking me to low-income or war-torn countries, where I can provide practical assistance and make a meaningful impact on people’s lives, and I am certain my experience with YWAM will lay a foundation for this.
How can you help?
Throughout Sixth Form I have saved money by working at a care home, which was originally for university. I have put all of this money towards my trip, and I will also be working full time until January to help finance it. I have been able to fully cover the cost of my time in Hawaii and some of my mission on my own. However, even with the help of my parents and the eventual sale of my car, I am still £3000 short for my outreach. There are two main ways I will be asking for your help:
1. Pray for me! I would really appreciate prayer that I can raise the money needed to be able to go to YWAM, and that my time there will be impactful, both for myself and for furthering God's kingdom. If this prayer could continue throughout my time with YWAM, not just throughout the fundraising period, that would be so greatly appreciated!
2. Support me through donation/sponsorship! I will be running a half marathon on the 9th of November as part of my fundraising effort (and if you know me you know that this is not my idea of fun...), and any amount of money you can spare towards sponsoring me, large or small, will be deeply treasured. If you want to commit to giving via a standing order throughout the year please contact me!
Additionally, if anyone would like regular updates about how God is moving in me and the community in Kona, please send me your phone number! I will set up a broadcast group on Whatsapp (not a groupchat - don't worry!) and will keep you updated and send any prayer requests!
I don't like asking for money, and I am trusting in God for his provision as I truly cannot make this trip happen on my own.
"I lift up my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth."
