Last year, the Phi Sigma Kappa Little 500 team shattered expectations—a squad of all freshmen with no prior racing experience posted a 2:39.41 qualifying time, one of the best in house history. They went on to finish 28th in the race, gaining invaluable experience that will drive their next three years of competition. Now, with a year of training and racing behind them, the team is aiming for a top-half finish.
This team has committed to a four-year mindset, understanding that each race is a stepping stone toward making Phi Sigma Kappa a top contender. Their entrepreneurial approach has attracted a high-caliber coaching team, including a former Little 500 champion, a professional cyclist from the U.S. Track World Team, and a USA Triathlon All-American.
The Next Step: Upgrading for the Future
Despite their dedication, the team faces a major challenge: inadequate equipment. To keep progressing, they need:
- Upgrades to their race bikes (State Bicycle Co.)
- Fluid trainers for effective training & warm-ups
- Proper race kits (look fast, race fast)
- Training software to analyze & improve performance
- Road bike modifications for outdoor training & group rides, essential for race-day alliances
While each rider is responsible for purchasing their own bike, our goal is to offset additional expenses like tune-ups, new wheels, smart trainers, bike computers, shoes, power meters, and nutrition—all critical for pushing the team to the next level.
