Support Peter's Recovery and Justice Journey

As Peter continues to heal from a life threatening motorcycle accident on January 28, 2024 in Daytona Beach, Florida, his family, friends and acquaintances he has met along his life’s journey, want to show love and support. Peter was struck by a car on his left side. His motorcycle went flying right from underneath him. Peter was left for dead.

Thankfully, a good Samaritan came by and reported the accident. Peter was transported to the Trauma Unit of the hospital as a “John Doe” so they could immediately work on his injuries. The homicide detectives of the Daytona Beach Police Department are handling the investigation.

We are starting a Go Fund Me to help Peter cover expenses as a result of this horrific accident. Peter was in the hospital for 39 days and labeled “self pay.” Once Peter was released from the hospital on March 5th, he would be returning to the operating room for one more surgery to put bone back in his leg, taking the bone from his hip area. His medical staff expects a long road ahead consisting of many doctor visits and rehabilitation in the future. Peter’s medical staff encompasses a plastic surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, vascular surgeon, pain management doctor and infectious disease doctor.

Peter had lost a lot of blood; he needed 2 blood transfusions in those early hours, and 2 more in the days to follow. He had an open compound fracture of the tibia/fibula and lost about 4 inches of bone in his leg. In addition, he was being monitored for a brain bleed and being treated for road rash. Peter also lost muscle and one artery in his left leg (we all have 3 arteries).

After the initial surgery that Sunday around 0800 the orthopedic surgeon expressed to his sister the possibility of an amputation of Peter’s left leg. However, they would do everything they could to avoid that outcome. We are so grateful for the competence and perseverance of the doctors at Halifax Hospital on duty that frightful night.

Thanks to all my prayer warriors who contributed to the disappearance of the potential brain injury and so many other answered prayers for Peter.

Florida’s insurance requirement for a driver to obtain a license is a measly $10k, which is all the person who struck him possessed. Peter now faces astronomical expenses because he did not have health insurance when this accident happened. For the first 39 days in the hospital, and the first 9 surgeries, he qualified as “self pay”, leaving him with a whopping $743k just for hospital care. Unfortunately, he did not qualify for emergency Medicare, Medicaid or Charity Care. Heaven knows we tried. Ultimately, Peter was able to purchase health insurance through FloridaMarketplace starting March 1st. We are grateful that the insurance covers preexisting conditions. The 10th surgery was covered completely.

Peter’s everyday living expenses and copays are depleting any funds in his savings. He was determined to find a job with benefits, however his plans were suddenly interrupted by this dreadful motorcycle accident. He is still waiting on Florida’s court system to charge the perpetrator in order to move forward for victims compensation which will require legal fees. Outrageous hospital bills are sitting dormant for now. He is seeking attorney counsel and advice to bring justice to this unfortunate accident that changed his life.

These past months have been incredibly emotional for Peter. He grappled with the uncertainty of whether he’d keep his left leg, endured immense pain from multiple invasive surgeries, and faced mental anguish as he relied on others for even the simplest movements. Added to this emotional turmoil was the stress of financial responsibilities for the medical care he received. Now, after four long months of not bearing any weight on his left leg, Peter is about to embark on a new chapter. Starting on June 20th, he’ll begin physical therapy—a journey to learn how to walk all over again. Learning to walk again isn’t just about muscles and bones; it’s about resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of those who care about him.

Peter’s journey is far from over, but he’s taking those first steps—literally and metaphorically. Each one brings him closer to reclaiming his life, one stride at a time.
