Hello! My name is Pen. I’m a 23-year-old college senior on the autism spectrum, graduating this May.
I have also been diagnosed with an auditory processing disorder, misophonia, and a stutter, so I have faced my fair share of challenges with communication and sensory processing. However, I have worked hard to find my voice.
Recently, I co-created The Odds , an online comic about problem gambling among neurodivergent teens and young adults. The response has been incredible, and we’ve been invited to present at some amazing conferences in Massachusetts (in April) and Las Vegas (in May).
Public speaking is extremely difficult for me, but I’m determined not to let my disability define my limits. I’m actually excited to present about The Odds and have created a coloring book / workbook to share with attendees to help make our presentation more interactive and meaningful.
Unfortunately, the cost of printing is crazy. Plane tickets are outrageous, too.
I just can not afford the $2,200 needed for travel, printing, and conference costs. And, after a recent family health crisis, finances are very tight.
I really, really hate to ask, but unfortunately, I need a little help to make it to these conferences.
A good friend of mine said to me today: "You do not need to apologize for asking for support. People will give or not, but only if you ask."
So, I'm asking as politely as I can. Any support you can give, no matter how small, would mean so much.
Thank you for listening!
Pen
