I first met Penny, a scared and hungry stray, outside an apartment complex a few years ago with no name. I saw a coin glimmering on the ground beside her and I took it as a sign and that’s how she got her name.

After months of gaining her trust, she soon became friendly, chatty and always hungry for food (lol). She knew I would be in our special spot with her food and treats everyday. However, this time, she stopped showing up. I was worried and scared and looked for her for months, “penny where are you” but there would be no response back…until very recently, I saw her hiding in a bush.. loafing herself tightly in the cold, with her eyes barely open…her fur looked unhealthy and matted, she looked extremely skinny.

I approached her slowly, making sure not to scare her and I noticed something in her eye, everything completely greyed out…she is going blind..

With the help of a local rescue, we safely trapped her and I brought her inside. From the moment she stepped into my home, she’s shown nothing but love and trust; purring softly, leaning into pets, and finally letting herself rest.

The next morning, I took her straight to the vet for a full checkup. She received her vaccines, bloodwork, and initial care, but then came the devastating news:

Her damaged eye is causing her constant pain, and has developed a cataract due to eye trauma. The vet explained that she urgently needs two major surgeries — a luxated lens repair and cataract removal— both of which are specialized and expensive procedures.

I never planned for this financially when I rescued her, I didn’t think about how I would manage the costs; I only knew I couldn’t leave her outside in the cold winters to suffer. But now that she’s safe, I’m determined to give her the comfort and care she deserves.
