Peaches is a beautiful 10 year-old part Maine Coon kitty. We had a scary week as her symptoms were very sudden and progressed very rapidly.

She presented with what we thought were seizures. She was bobbing her head and her body appeared to be shaking and twitching; she had no control over her body. This was very scary to watch as it played out in front of me, I felt so helpless and had no way of helping her.

The Timeline:

  • 9/30: Her first "seizure" happened on Monday night and we took her to Quakertown Veterinary Clinic as an emergency visit. They did bloodwork, which all came back normal. She was prescribed pain killers and a muscle relaxer.
  • 10/2: She had another "seizure", which I was able to film this time. We took her back to QVC right away. We were told she could have a seizure disorder, an underlying infection of some sort, or a neuromuscular disorder. We got referred to Metropolitan Veterinary Associates for a neuro check. She was prescribed antibiotics in case she did have an underlying infection.
  • 10/3: She had another attack. We made an appointment for Tuesday at MVA neuro department.
  • 10/4: Two more attacks.
  • 10/5: Two more attacks.
  • 10/6: We decided to take her to MVA emergency as her attacks were progressing rapidly. She had one on the way to MVA. They took her straight back to do a work up and exam. She was admitted on a "Seizure Watch".
  • 10/7: They did x-rays in the morning, and thought they had found a mass. It turned out that she had a collapsed lung lobe due to anesthesia. They did an MRI and found evidence of a stroke. They also found a deep inner ear infection in her left ear that is being treated with antibiotics. They don't think this is related to her symptoms.

What's Next:

Our next steps are trying to figure out what caused her stroke and getting that treated to avoid any possible future strokes.

At this point, we are almost certain she did not have any real seizures during this past week, which is a relief. Had we not gotten the MRI, we would have been under the impression that she had a seizure disorder most likely, and give her anti seizure meds for the rest of her life. While the MRI was a huge expense, we believe it was necessary to finding out the true cause of her symptoms.

Our main goal is to prolong her life as much as we can. She is such a happy cat and she is the true definition of a spoiled house cat (how it should be)! :)
