Hello, and thank you for visiting our page! We are a group of Virginia Tech Myers-Lawson School of Construction students participating in a semester-long service project, and we need your help!
This semester, we are working on home repair and improvements at a number of houses in Dickenson County, which is part of Central Appalachia. It is in the southwest part of Virginia and is one of the lowest income areas of the Commonwealth. The communities we are working in are full of kind, genuine, and hard-working people, and they deserve a helping hand just as much as anybody.
We are working with two local community organizations, the Binns-Counts Center in McClure and Grace House near St. Paul. They have
identified six projects among people who are in greatest need
because of situations of income, aging, and health conditions. We have taken on the task of performing the labor needed to help these folks out.
And so: we are inviting friends and community organizations to
support this project! University grants for these projects have been cut, so our pool of funding is currently limited. Each student is volunteering their time in the middle of a busy semester, and everyone involved would appreciate any contributions you are able to make. (No funds will go to the students. Your donation will support the projects and arrangements.)
This support will allow us to build one long accessible ramp for an
elderly gentleman in Clintwood, three or more smaller ramps for
residents who have mobility issues, and assess the long-term
task of repairing extensive floor damage to a house near
Coeburn.
Your support will be greatly appreciated. It will make a significant
difference in the lives of people in these communities. We would
love to share some photos or videos with you when we return And even if you can't contribute monetarily, you can always help by spreading the word!
