My aunt Pauline Smith is my late mother's baby sister. She has been a resident of Hartland, NY with her husband Charles for the past 53 years and, by the grace of God, will be celebrating her 80th birthday this coming May. She is the youngest daughter, and the last living child and namesake of Pauline Caraco LaFontaine of Johnstown, NY. Pauline Smith has been a pillar of the Hartland/Newfane communities during these 53 years. She has been avidly involved with such duties as helping with voting at the Hartland Town Hall, and passionately involved with the Niagara County Federation of Conservation Clubs, working alongside her 88-year-old husband Charles. She is a member of the Hartland NY Conservation Club, where she was driving to with food and supplies for the evening's event, when she was struck by a man running the stop sign at the intersection Pauline was passing through. He was driving a large pickup truck while under the influence of drugs. Now, one week after the accident, Pauline currently remains in the ICU of Erie County Medical Center of Buffalo, NY. It is there where doctors discovered she had suffered extensive injuries. These injuries include, but are not limited to, 8 broken ribs, 3 fractured vertebrae, a broken leg, blood found in her eye, kidneys and lungs, a ruptured diaphragm and intestinal injuries. She remains intubated until doctors feel she is strong enough to breathe on her own. At this time, the future is extremely uncertain for the Smith family. Financially, it is unknown how her immediate and future needs will be met. Our family is hopeful and prayerful my sweet, selfless aunt will be able to recover from this horror to see her 80th birthday this May. Her journey to full recovery, God willing, will be long, difficult and extensive. Any and all financial assistance to assure Pauline has everything she needs to aid her in that recovery process is gratefully, and eternally appreciated by the Smith family.
