On Monday, Mar. 4th, my brother Paul (37 years old) suffered a stroke while out walking his favorite furry friends, Mojo and Wilson. Thankfully, he and his amazing girlfriend, Lindsey, acted fast and he was rushed to the hospital where he received emergency medical care.
Paul was in the ICU for 2.5 days, where doctors ran a multitude of tests including multiple CT scans, an MRI, blood tests, and more. What the doctors found was that Paul suffered a stroke to the lower left side of his brain, which has effected his ability to use his right arm (his dominant hand), slowed his speech pattern, and caused additional underlying issues that will most likely affect him for life.
As with most stroke patients, Paul will have to undergo weeks and possibly months (or more) of outpatient therapy. He will not be able to work, he will have to follow a restrictive diet/lifestyle, and must spend most of his time resting, allowing his brain and body to recover to the best of its ability.
And that's where we (his friends, family, and community) come in. So many people have reached out to ask how they can support Paul and Lindsey. If you know these two, you know they are two hard-working, but extremely stubborn individuals, who would never ask for financial help. So that's why I am going to ask you for them :).
Paul is one of millions of Americans that does not have and could not afford medical insurance. From a person (me) who has experienced a hospital visit without medical insurance first hand, they are looking at approximately $50,000 in hospital bills (ambulance, tests and scans, blood work, medicine, doctors bills, lab testing) and that's not even considering the cost of many months of outpatient therapy.
Paul and Linds will also be on a one-income household until Paul is able to work again. Not only do Paul and Lindsey both have day jobs, but they are also musicians, and this will have a huge impact on their music until Paul is (hopefully) able to use his right arm to it's full potential.
That being said, with medical costs, outpatient therapy, lack of income, and two furry sons to provide for, these two will seriously need financial help.
Now if Paul wasn't 37, I may not be asking this of anyone. But to work as hard as these two do and to have such a shocking medical emergency happen at that age would rock anyone's foundation. Anyone that has ever met these two know that they would do anything for you! Whether that's cooking you the most delicious meal you have ever had in your life, singing you a song, motivating you to reach your fitness goals, giving you a place to stay (even if that meant sharing the bed with Mojo), buying you a drink, supporting you as a starving artist, holding you while you cried (yeah, I said it), making you laugh until your stomach hurt, or just simply gave you a hug and a smile.... nows the time to show them that same love back <3
The goal may be high, but so is our love for these two amazing people! Even if we do not reach it, any bit helps. Start bustin out those wallets my beautiful people!
Lastly, I am happy to report that Paul's sense of humor remains intact. As Paul would sarcastically jest, "care for some potato in this trying time?"
