On December 15, 2025 Paul Brinkman, Janet (Crawley) Brinkman's husband suffered a catastrophic medical emergency. He was found semiconscious, 911 was called. On the way to the hospital Paul needed to be resuscitated and he arrived at the hospital unconscious and not breathing on his own. He was put on the ventilator. It was discovered that Paul had bleeding in the brain that resulted in him having a hemorrhagic stroke. Paul then spent the nest 21 days in the intensive care unit at a cost of several thousands of dollars. While insurance does pay a huge part of that expense it does not pay for everything, such as the bills from the doctors that interpret the radiology films and write the reports. So far this year Janet has received $15,000 of doctors bills with more to come.
Paul is in a long term acute care hospital now. He has made some recovery, but unfortunately progress is extremely slow. It is going to be a very long process. He is breathing on his own now, moves his arms and legs and can talk some (short sentences and mostly single words). He is on tube feedings as he is not alert enough to do a swallow study to see if he can eat. He also is not alert enough to do the 3 hours of therapy a day that is required to go to the rehab unit.
Janet and Paul's insurance will only cover 33 days at the acute care hospital and then it will be skilled nursing until he can go to rehab. If Paul goes to a skilled nursing facility that will easily be over $10,000 a month. Since it is a new year Janet and Paul need to meet their new deductible, so another out of pocket expense. All this time Janet has been trying to work as well as oversee Paul's care and try to get disability for him and some more financial assistance. She has met roadblock after roadblock in navigating the government systems. Paul is unable to sign the disability forms and she can't sign for him. Since she can't sign for him she has to get conservatorship which may require obtaining a lawyer and more out of pocket expense. She is trying to get financial assistance anywhere she can, but it is all a long process and in the meantime medical expenses continue to add up. Janet is having to take time off of work to navigate all of the legal paperwork, another loss of income. This unexpected medical event has escalated into a financial crisis with no apparent full recovery in sight. Please if you feel inclined to donate it. will be greatly appreciated and all prayers for recovery are more than welcome.
