Help Patrick Fischer Fight To Save His Eyesight From a Tumor
Donation protected
I'm Patrick's sister, Pam, and as many of you may remember Patrick had surgery about 2 ½ years ago to remove a benign solid brain tumor (craniopharyngioma). It required 2 surgeries and radiation afterward. Although they were unable to remove the entire tumor it was greatly reduced in size and deemed inactive. As of June of this year his vision began to be affected once again and after more tests it was determined a fluid filled tumor, or cyst had developed in the same vicinity. His doctor drained it through the port that was left for just such the possibility of accessing the site without additional surgery, however, it filled up once again after a couple weeks requiring more drainage. It has been drained over 10 times since then but now he is having to have it done once a week as it is affecting his eyesight and if left unchecked could do damage to his optic nerve leaving him blind. His local doctors have limited experience with this type of tumor and don’t want to perform additional surgeries and have referred him first to UVA and finally Johns Hopkins where he is scheduled for pre-surgery testing on December 20 and surgery on December 23 requiring a possible 3 to 7 day hospitalization. They won’t do the surgery as before for fear of him having a stroke or seizure. They will be going through his nose to put a drainage hole on the front side of the cyst to allow the fluid to drain on its own (similar to a post nasal drip), however if that’s not possible they may have to go to the backside of the cyst which is more difficult. They won’t know until they get in there. He feels comfortable with this doctor and procedure that they feel is his best option at this time. His out of pocket for the past year was $9,000 and was met a couple months ago. As you can imagine he has missed many days of work over the past several months not to mention the costs for all the recent tests, doctor visits, medications and upcoming surgery he is preparing for. His insurance renews December 1 which means his out of pocket payments start over. His outlook is typical Patrick, just getter done! We know times are tight for people right now, however if you feel you can donate any amount to him it would be greatly appreciated.
