I have been privileged to travel across the globe and have finally found a way to give back to a deserving cause. On my trip to Zimbabwe, our guide, Patrick Mhlanga, explained both the beauty and challenges that his country provides. He is nearing retirement and his dream is to open a student farm for his local community. The water tables in his area are 100 meters beneath the soil, and he currently has funding for the first 80 meters but requires help for the additional 20 meters that are required. With your help, the community can finish construction of the necessary water pipeline to open the student farm.

The farm will provide educational opportunities for the local villagers to learn agricultural practices while providing fresh produce to sell for continual funding of the operation. They just need to finish the water pipeline and plant/harvest their first round of crops to get started. They plan to cultivate several crops to provide a breadth of opportunities for people to learn how to produce their own food and provide for their community for years to come.

As a University of California, Davis graduate with a degree in Biotechnology and emphasis in Plant Science, this model is close to my heart. I spent years working at the student farm in Davis, and this is the same model that was used there—so I know it works.
