Help Patricia and Her Dog Clarke Avoid Homelessness
Hello, my name is Patricia.
I’m 71 years old, in poor health, and facing the terrifying reality of losing my home. I’m reaching out for help today—something I’ve never done before—because I truly have nowhere else to turn.
This is my beloved dog Clarke. He’s blind and deaf, and we’ve been each other’s constant companion through incredibly difficult times.
My Story
I was born and raised in South London and moved to New York City nearly 50 years ago. I built a life here as a professional hairdresser, proudly trained by Vidal Sassoon, and worked in the field for 35 years.
Twenty years ago, I was fortunate enough to purchase a small condo of my own. It gave me a sense of security and independence—until disaster struck.
In 2016, a spontaneous flood severely damaged my bathroom and kitchen. Thankfully, I had homeowner’s insurance through a well-known, reputable company. They assured me the damages would be covered and even recommended one of their “approved” contractors.
I trusted them.
The contractor began demolition but never returned. I later discovered he was unlicensed and had a long history of fraud. My apartment was left in shambles and nearly unlivable. When I turned back to the insurance company, they denied responsibility. I contacted legal aid and even wrote to the State Attorney General, but received no help. I couldn’t afford an attorney myself—especially as my health declined and I was no longer able to work.
Where Things Stand Now
Since then, I’ve been living in heartbreaking conditions—with no working toilet, shower, stove, or refrigerator. Much of my home remains torn apart, with my belongings packed into corners for lack of space. Sometimes, I don’t even have running water.
I’ve exhausted all my savings just trying to keep up with mortgage payments and survive. But now, I’ve fallen behind. Foreclosure is looming within the next couple of months, and I could lose my home.
To make matters worse, my health has seriously deteriorated. I’ve recently been diagnosed with:
• Ischemic stroke
• Congestive heart failure
• Chronic lung issues
• Autoimmune disease
I now rely on Adult Protective Services for advocacy—but they do not provide financial help. I’m hoping they may help me find a lawyer so I can pursue justice and maybe restore my home enough to eventually sell and move somewhere safe.
What I’m Asking
Right now, I just need time—to stay in my home while trying to sort through this nightmare. Your donations would help me:
• Catch up on mortgage payments
• Maintain basic living needs for myself and Clarke
• Access the legal help I so urgently need
This isn’t easy for me to ask. I’ve always been independent. But I truly don’t have any other options.
Any amount, no matter how small, would mean the world to me. And if you can’t give, please consider sharing my story.
From the bottom of my heart—thank you for reading, and thank you for caring.
With love,
Patricia
