Hello everyone, my name is Karla Lima.
With a very heavy heart, I'm creating this page for my mother, Patricia, who as of November has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, an aggressive, fast-moving blood cancer that needs immediate and aggressive treatment. At times, I still can’t believe these words are true.
It started as a trip to the Mount Sinai ER due to difficulty breathing, bone pain, and extreme fatigue, where she was diagnosed with RSV and told her hemoglobin was low due to her anemia. She was sent home with antibiotics and told to come back if she didn't feel better in 3 days. She did not. Three days later, when she returned, her blood counts were dangerously low, which led to a blood transfusion, further testing, and finally led to her diagnosis of PH+ ALL. She's currently in her induction phase; next will be consolidation, then maintenance for a few years. It is expected to be a long road to recovery.
Patricia has always been a light in everyone’s life. She's had the rug pulled from under her and is now fighting this horrible battle against cancer. She’s always been fiercely independent and never asked anyone for anything, but she is currently out of work for the foreseeable future, and I myself have made the difficult decision to resign from my job to be her full-time caregiver. While my partner has boldly taken the role of supporting us at home, our support could only take her so far.
I'm creating this GoFundMe on her behalf to ease the financial burden so she can focus on making it through this treatment to recovery. Funds raised will help pay for expenses related to her medical treatment, such as expenses not covered by insurance, such as hospitalization coinsurance, specialty medication copays, medical supplies, etc.
Just a few weeks ago, my mom was independent. Working, throwing me a surprise birthday party, teaching, dancing, and living her life to the fullest. Today, she is constantly in and out of the hospital, if not, 6+ clinical visits per week, undergoing blood transfusions, periodic spinal taps injecting chemotherapy into her spinal fluid, IV antibiotics, high-dose steroids, targeted therapies, and yet there's so much more to come. She is extremely weak, battling infections, and facing the most difficult fight of her life. The diagnosis was sudden and has completely turned our family’s world upside down. Our goal is for her to return to her normal life. Working at her job she loves so much, taking her granddaughter shopping, going to concerts and events with her friends, cruises with the family, hosting Christmas at home, and enjoying the life she was always so grateful for.
Any contribution is appreciated, even just a share! Add some encouraging words for her to read as well! This treatment is a rollercoaster. Some days feel close to normal, and others so low I can’t put into words. But the love and support we've received so far have made a world's difference.
The goal placed is what GoFundMe recommended, but truly any and every amount would be helpful. Every donation will go directly toward ensuring we can keep her financially stable while undergoing treatment and covering bills that continue regardless of her diagnosis.

Hola a todos, me llamo Karla Lima. Con gran pesar, creo esta página para mi madre, Patricia, quien en noviembre fue diagnosticada con Leucemia Linfoblástica Aguda, un cáncer de sangre agresivo y de rápida evolución que requiere un tratamiento inmediato y agresivo. A veces, todavía no puedo creer que estas palabras sean ciertas.
Todo comenzó con una visita a urgencias del Monte Sinaí debido a dificultad para respirar, dolor óseo y fatiga extrema, donde le diagnosticaron VSR y le informaron que tenía la hemoglobina baja debido a la anemia. La enviaron a casa con antibióticos y le indicaron que regresara si no mejoraba en 3 días. No mejoró. Tres días después, cuando regresó, sus hemogramas estaban peligrosamente bajos, lo que la llevó a una transfusión de sangre, a más pruebas y finalmente al diagnóstico de LLA PH+. Actualmente se encuentra en su fase de inducción; luego, la de consolidación y, luego, la de mantenimiento durante algunos años. Se espera que sea un largo camino hacia la recuperación.
Patricia siempre ha sido una luz en la vida de todos, y ahora está librando esta terrible batalla contra el cáncer. Siempre ha sido muy independiente y nunca le pidió nada a nadie, pero actualmente está sin trabajo por un tiempo, y yo misma he tomado la difícil decisión de renunciar a mi trabajo para ser su cuidadora a tiempo completo. Si bien mi pareja ha asumido con valentía el rol de apoyarnos en casa, nuestro apoyo solo la ha ayudado hasta cierto punto.
Estoy creando este GoFundMe en su nombre para aliviar la carga financiera y que pueda concentrarse en superar este tratamiento y recuperarse. Los fondos recaudados ayudarán a pagar los gastos relacionados con su tratamiento médico, como los gastos no cubiertos por el seguro, como el coseguro de hospitalización, los copagos de medicamentos especializados, los suministros médicos, etc.
Hace solo unas semanas, mi mamá era independiente. Trabajaba, me organizaba una fiesta de cumpleaños sorpresa, daba clases, bailaba y vivía la vida al máximo. Hoy en día, entra y sale constantemente del hospital, o incluso más de 6 visitas clínicas por semana, recibiendo transfusiones de sangre, punciones lumbares periódicas para inyectar quimioterapia en el líquido cefalorraquídeo, antibióticos intravenosos, esteroides en dosis altas, terapias dirigidas, y aún así, hay mucho más por venir. Está extremadamente débil, luchando contra infecciones y afrontando la batalla más difícil de su vida. El diagnóstico fue repentino y ha trastocado por completo el mundo de nuestra familia. Nuestro objetivo es que vuelva a su vida normal: trabajar en el trabajo que tanto ama, llevar a su nieta de compras, ir a conciertos y eventos con sus amigos, cruceros con la familia, celebrar la Navidad en casa y disfrutar de la vida por la que siempre estuvo tan agradecida.

Algunos días se sienten casi normales, y otros tan deprimidos que no puedo expresarlo con palabras. Pero el amor y el apoyo que hemos recibido hasta ahora han marcado una gran diferencia.
