Three years ago, my family and I, Nisharaga Patel, embarked on a journey filled with excitement and dreams as we landed in the USA. Settling in Lakeland, FL, we hoped for a fresh start, supported by my aunt and uncle. My dad, Ashwin Patel, dove into the world of furniture restoration, while my mom, Kalyaniben Patel, found employment at Publix. Balancing education and work became my daily challenge. Life's unpredictability struck us harshly just two weeks ago when my parents were in a devastating car accident, landing them both in the emergency room.
The impact was so intense that they had to cut open the passenger door to rescue my father. I thank God my mom suffered minor injuries on the other side of the collision, but my dear father wasn't as fortunate. He sustained over six fractures in his pelvic and lumbar areas, tearing his bladder. He also endured a head and spinal injury. Multiple surgeries later, he still resides in the trauma ICU after 17days. We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support pouring in from family and friends.
While he slowly recovers, the road ahead appears daunting for him, my mom, and me. Doctors predict a challenging 6 months to a year before he can regain independent mobility. Extensive periods of physical therapy and follow-ups lie ahead, as well as many bills from the hospital. With our only car now totaled and limited insurance coverage, we face insurmountable financial strain. This incident has altered our lives drastically, plunging us into a profound financial and emotional crisis.
