My grandparents were born into poverty. My Papaw grew up in the Portland area of Louisville and my Nanny in rural Hart County, Kentucky. Papaw considers himself a lucky duck meeting Nanny by coincidence as teenagers over fifty-eight years ago. They never left each other's side since. Every challenge in life they faced, they faced together. All they needed was each other. They even faced the biggest challenge of all, Nanny's terminal cancer. He never left her side, even at her last breath. He has never had to face life alone until now.

Papaw is now facing the hardest moment of life: losing the love of his life. For the first time he is navigating grief and financial hardship on his own. Nanny had a small life insurance policy of 3k to cover some funeral expenses but it is not enough. They were never the type of people to ask for help—but we are asking for him. We want to ease Papaw's financial stress so he can focus on honoring Nanny's memory rather than worrying about the costs of laying her to rest. It would mean everything to us to be able to care for him the way that they took care of each other (with love and support).
