Founded by Dr Omar Khamis, Glimmer of Hope Academy (GoHA) is a project launched from Gaza, built on the simple yet profound premise of reigniting the light into students’ lives and enabling them to pursue aspirations that were abruptly derailed by war.
As one student clearly expressed:
“We are not just numbers; we are individuals with dreams and the passion to continue our studies.”
Despite extraordinary hardship, GoHA offers moments of clarity and hope by providing students with the skills and opportunities to take control of their futures.
Today, GoHA supports over 1,000 students with the help of around ten international teachers and two dedicated members of core staff. The Academy’s central objectives are to provide the following courses:
1. English Language Training
- Beginner to Advanced Courses: Tailored classes to meet various levels of language proficiency, from beginners to advanced learners.
- IELTS/TOEFL Preparation: Specialised training for individuals preparing for international exams.
- Conversational English: Focus on practical speaking skills for everyday communication and professional settings.
- Pronunciation: Improve clarity and confidence in spoken English.
- Psychosocial support: Trauma informed teaching for students.
2. Freelancing Skills Development
- Introduction to Freelancing: Overview of the freelancing world, platforms (Upwork, Fiverr, etc.), and how to establish a successful freelancing career.
- Digital Skills Training: Courses on digital marketing, web development, graphic design, content writing, social media management and more.
- Freelancer Portfolio Building: Guidance on creating professional portfolios to showcase skills and attract clients.
The center will cater to a wide variety of individuals, including:
- Graduates and undergraduates looking to enhance their language skills and gain knowledge of freelancing opportunities.
- Job seekers looking to develop English proficiency for better career opportunities.
- Individuals who are eager to start or enhance their freelancing careers.
- Employees aiming to improve their English skills for professional growth.
Training Methods:
1. Classroom-Based Learning: Interactive sessions with experienced instructors.
2. Online Learning: Live and recorded sessions for remote learners.
3. Workshops and Practical Sessions: Hands-on activities, case studies, and mock projects to simulate real-life scenarios.
4. Group Discussions and Peer Feedback: Encouraging collaboration among participants to boost confidence and language practice.
5. Blended Training: Using online courses for face-to-face classes.
The aim of our project is to establish an academy (in Mawasi area) to provide students with a place to learn, complete with the necessary equipment and a stable internet connection for all. Most importantly, we want to support those students with limited means, who cannot manage to get internet access and computers due to the current challenging circumstance.
