Well….2025 has not started off in a good way for us. My daughter Paige McCoy has been injured by a neglectful careless driver. She was finishing up work on Wednesday evening when she got a flat tire. A manager from her job came to help change the tire. Both her vehicle and the manager’s vehicle had their headlights and hazard lights on. The at-fault driver slammed into the back of the manager’s car pushing it into my daughter’s car. When this happened, my daughter was standing at the trunk to retrieve something from inside. The collision caused her right leg to be smashed in between the 2 cars. She is suffering from an external compound fracture of her femur along with small fractures in the fibula and tibia. Some damage was done to the knee but not the kneecap, this damage caused an injury like an ACL injury. The broken femur sliced through some of the muscles in the back of the leg shredding them beyond repair. This has caused about 25% muscle loss. She has severe skin tissue damage and the nerves on the back of the leg are completely exposed. During her first surgery they cleaned and washed the backside of her open leg, installed antibiotic beads and installed a set of external fixation bars. 2 days later they did another surgery to repeat the process of washing the exposed area and adding more antibiotics. They also placed what they call a black sponge inside the wound. This sponge is placed in the wound to remove secretions, improve circulation, and help form granulation tissue. They will repeat this process until the tissue shows signs of improvement and growth. Her 3rd surgery is tomorrow. Once they are confident that the tissue is not going to die completely, they will insert a steel rod into her femur. If it does not regenerate and dies off, then we go down a much more difficult road. She will need lots of physical therapy to strengthen the remaining muscles in the femur and most likely plastic surgery. The kicker in all of this is the at-fault driver does not have car insurance. Paige does not have health insurance but luckily, she was not finished with work for the day so she will get workers compensation to help cover the medical expenses and some lost wages. She is a young healthy 25-year-old with a long journey ahead of her which probably includes things that we are still unaware of at this point. If you are in a position to help, it would greatly be appreciated.
