Paige is 7 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 4. Her family would love for her to have a Diabetic Alert Dog.
Diabetic Alert Dogs are specifically trained to assist diabetics in their everyday lives. Their primary task is to alert their handler of an oncoming hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic event (low or high blood sugars). A Diabetic Alert Dog's early detection of these events enables the handler to take steps to get their blood sugar back in the normal range before it becomes dangerous.
The program includes 14-16 months of training. The dog would be fully trained for public access, in obedience, and trained in alerting to 90% of the out-of-range blood sugars. It also includes all travel to Paige and training to teach her all of the commands and training so that Paige will be successful in transitioning the dog to her lifestyle.
The cost of a Diabetic Alert Dog is $32,000.
