Help Paige Live Her Best Life: A Service Dog for a Brave Little Girl with Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC)
Goal: $20,000
At just two years old, Paige is a fighter. She was diagnosed with Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC), a rare and complex condition that causes recurring episodes of paralysis, as well as other neurological and developmental challenges. Every day, Paige and her family face the uncertainties of living with AHC, but they continue to approach life with incredible strength and resilience.
We’re reaching out to you today because Paige deserves to have the best quality of life, and we believe that a specially trained service dog could offer her the support and independence she so desperately needs. This service dog will not only help Paige navigate daily challenges but will also provide vital medical assistance, and assist her parents in supporting Paige.
Why a Service Dog?
Paige’s condition requires constant care, especially due to the episodic necessity of her ventilator, which she depends on to breathe. The service dog will be trained to help with several critical tasks, including:
Apnea Detection: The dog will alert Paige’s caregivers to any breathing irregularities or apnea events, giving them the precious time needed to act quickly in an emergency.
Behavior Disruption: The dog will help interrupt behaviors that arise from Paige’s medical condition, offering comfort and calming support during difficult moments.
Pressure Training: The dog will assist in providing gentle pressure therapy, a technique known to reduce anxiety and help Paige feel grounded during stressful situations.
Medical Alerts: The dog will also be trained to alert to any malfunctions in Paige's ventilator or other medical devices, ensuring that her care is always a step ahead of any complications.
In addition to assisting Paige directly, the service dog will also play an important role in supporting her parents, who are her primary caregivers. The dog will serve as a service dog for Paige’s parents with a specific focus on Paige’s unique needs. By helping monitor her condition, the dog will give Paige’s parents some peace of mind, knowing that they have an extra set of “eyes” and “ears” when it comes to ensuring her health and safety. This added support will allow them to focus on other essential aspects of caregiving and daily life.
As the dog grows alongside Paige, it will empower her to live with more confidence, possibly even reducing her dependence on the ventilator over time. This life-changing assistance could give Paige a better sense of independence—something every child deserves.
The Cost of a Life-Changing Dog
Training a service dog of this caliber is a significant investment. The cost for training alone $20,000 to $50,000. Fortunately, we are incredibly blessed to work with a family friend who is a professional dog trainer, willing to train Paige’s service dog at a highly discounted rate. However, there are still substantial costs associated with training and providing the specific care that Paige’s dog will need.
We are hoping to raise $20,000 for the second year of 2026.
Training and Specialized Tasks: The first 6-18 months of training with a professional, including skills like apnea detection, behavior disruption, pressure training, and medical alerts.
Medical Equipment and Supplies: Specific tools, gear, and equipment needed for Paige’s dog to be trained and functional.
Food and Vet Insurance: Paige’s dog will require high-quality food and regular vet visits to ensure it stays healthy and ready to serve.
General Care: All costs associated with the continued care and support of Paige’s service dog.
This dog is not just a pet—it will be Paige's loyal companion, a constant source of support and a lifeline when she needs it most. With your help, Paige will be able to live a more independent, fulfilling life.
How You Can Help
We are asking for cash donations to cover the specific costs related to Paige’s service dog training, equipment, food, and medical needs. Due to the specialized nature of Paige’s medical condition, every dollar donated will go directly toward providing the best possible care and training for her service dog. Every donation, no matter how big or small, makes a huge difference.
