A few days ago, Owen—my sister’s older child and my sweet niblet—was in a serious accident. While skateboarding, a car suddenly veered toward them. To avoid being hit, Owen jumped out of the way, but the car struck their board, and Owen landed hard on the curb. The impact shattered their hip and broke their femur at the hip joint. The pain that night was intense, and Owen was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery to repair the femur and reconstruct the hip. This is just the beginning of a long and challenging recovery. Owen will be in a wheelchair for several weeks, then transition to a walker. They won’t be able to be independent for at least 12 weeks. Owen has worked at Tacovore for five years, always on their feet in the kitchen, but there’s no way they can return to that kind of work before March or April. While Owen can access Oregon Paid Leave, it only covers a percentage of their pay and doesn’t start for two weeks. Their hours had already been reduced for mental health reasons, so the support will help, but it won’t be enough to cover basic needs. We’re raising funds to help Owen cover rent, bills, and essentials for the next 3–4 months, as well as durable medical and accessibility equipment—like a wheelchair, walker, shower chair, and grab bars—to make their apartment safe and usable. Without help, Owen risks falling behind on rent and not being able to afford the equipment that will keep them safe and allow them to heal with dignity. Owen is fiercely independent and rarely asks for help, but now it’s time to reach out to the beautiful community we’ve fostered and ask for your support. Any contribution, big or small, will make a real difference in Owen’s recovery and peace of mind.
