Support Outdoor Ed on the River

Hi, my name is Anneke and I am a public high school teacher in San Bruno, California. I am fundraising to take my students on a five day environmental education program with Wild Science Explorers on the Salmon River in Idaho this summer.

The cost per student (including transportation from San Bruno, California to Idaho), is $1500. I have 14 high school kids who are hoping to experience this unique educational experience. All of my students are low-income and none of them can afford to pay for an opportunity like the one I can provide. I teach math and specialize in teaching math to students who are learning English. My students come from all over the world, but the one thing they have in common is a desire to learn English and about the world around them.

Last year, the Sierra Club generously funded my trip, but unfortunately, those funds have run out, so now I am appealing to my community to help fund this year's trip. We need funding to cover the costs of transportation to and from the river as well as the cost of the 5 day river trip.

Every student who went last year found the trip greatly meaningful. One student has received a full scholarship to complete river guide training so that he can become a white water rafting guide which will give him the opportunity to share his newly discovered love of the outdoors and the environmental knowledge gained by his experience with Wild Science Explorers.

The students that went last year not only gained an important appreciation and scientific understanding of wild river eco-systems, they all gained the confidence and desire to contribute to something larger than their everyday life.
