My husband and I found out recently that we were pregnant with identical twin girls. My OBGYN warned us of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome occurring and that I was at risk.
Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome occurs in 15-20% of mono/di twins (twins that have their own amniotic sacs but share a placenta). It is caused by wrong blood connections on the placenta, so one baby gets too much blood and the other baby does not get enough. It is very rare and is life-threatening to both twins. There are only a handful of hospitals in the US that offer the laser ablation surgery to treat TTTS. Without the surgery, the risk of one or both babies dying is 80-100%. The surgery will correct the blood vessels on the placenta to even blood flow between the twins.
Two weeks later, I was seen again by my OBGYN, and she confirmed that TTTS had started and referred me to Maternal Fetal Medicine at UAB for the next day. On March 20th, 2025, we were given the official diagnosis of Stage 3 TTTS. Baby A has too much amniotic fluid, and Baby B has basically no amniotic fluid. We have been referred to Texas Children’s for the surgery, as that is the closest hospital to us in Alabama that does the surgery.
We are scheduled to be there March 24th for the surgery and will have to stay a couple of days after. We had to last-minute book flights there, which ended up costing us over $1200 for just my husband and me.
Texas Children’s also told us that it is likely we’d have to go back to Houston even after the surgery. We are not financially well-prepared for last-minute travel, as well as my husband having to miss work for this.
So we are asking for any financial help for this incredibly scary journey. We are also asking for thoughts and prayers. We want both babies to make it and live long healthy lives, and this is our only shot.
