Support the South African Reading of SURVIVAL at PlayCo

Tax deductible
PlayCo and The Africa Center are teaming up with South African theatre artists Keenan Tyler Oliphant and Jo Evans to produce a reading and inter-generational discussion of Survival, a politically searing and comically irreverent 1976 play by Workshop71 about the carceral nature of life in apartheid South Africa, and the collective spirit of survival shared amongst the oppressed.

Devised by the company in a highly physical, experimental style under conditions of radical uncertainty and repression, Survival launched amidst the 1976 student uprising in Soweto. This was followed by an explosive California tour which led the cast into exile in the U.S., and a revival in 1990 on the night of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. The discussion and reading will feature Fana Kekana and Seth Sibanda, two of the work's original creators, who have lived in the U.S. since 1977 when they were exiled from South Africa due to the play's political content.

This event is an opportunity to share this incredible play with a new generation; explore the interconnections between South Africa and the U.S., the radical 70's and the troubled present; and honor the remarkable lives and artistic contributions of Seth Sibanda and Fana Kekana.

We've already raised half of the funds cover direct reading expenses. Please help us reach our goal with a gift that will support the following:

  • Artist Fees: PlayCo centers the well being and joy of all that work at PlayCo and this includes equitable compensation. Your gift will ensure a fair wage to all artists involved.
  • Travel costs for artists.
  • Space & Materials so the artists have access to the resources they need.
  • Cover the costs of filming the reading so that future generations can have access to this groundbreaking work.

$11,500 covers the direct costs of the reading presentation, but there are additional resources you can support. Any gifts received beyond the $11,500 goal will support:

  • The costs of community events that will bring together the South African community living in NYC with Harlemites and our PlayCo audiences in discussions over food and music.
  • PlayCo's indirect costs such as staff time spent on producing this reading. This support is just as important as supporting direct project expenses. It keeps our doors open and expands our mission of adventurous global programs.

Thank you for considering your support. Please visit PlayCo.org for more information on who we are and what we do!
