Our moving costs come to $9,625. We just found out that we also have to pay the last month’s rent upfront, which adds an unexpected $2,750 to our moving costs. That’s the part we still need help with—thankfully, we have the rest covered.
I honestly hate that I’m writing this. Asking for money is the most uncomfortable thing I can imagine, but my dogs mean everything to me, and I will do whatever it takes to keep them safe.
As many of you know, we have to move by September 2nd because our landlords are moving back in. For the past month and a half, I’ve searched non-stop for housing that would accept both of my dogs—my 13-year-old pit bull and my foster pit bull. It has been beyond exhausting, running into “no pets,” “one pet only,” weight limits, and, of course, the constant “breed restrictions.” At one point, I thought I might have to live in my car with them, because surrendering either of them was never an option. My senior dog is my heart, and the foster I took in would have been euthanized if I hadn’t stepped up.
Finally, something came through—just a week and a half before our deadline. In fact, three places opened up that would accept the dogs, and the one we’re pursuing is perfect: a single-family home on a quiet dead-end street, with a big yard and woods behind it (a little “horror movie vibes,” but perfect for us). It has front and back porches and plenty of space. The rent is $2,750, and because my son’s friend is moving in with us, we’ll be able to split costs and keep it affordable long-term.
The only hurdle is the move-in cost. With the security deposit, first month, and last month all due upfront, it comes to just over $9,600. We have most of that—we just need help covering the last $2,750 to secure the house. After this, we’ll be okay moving forward.
Once we’re settled and I can finally exhale after nearly three months of living in fight-or-flight, I plan to give back. I’ll be volunteering with MyPitBullisFamily.org and putting my energy into fighting the unfair breed restrictions that make it so difficult for families like mine to find safe, affordable housing. No one should have to fight this hard just to keep their dogs.
If you’re able to contribute, thank you from the bottom of my heart. And to everyone who has already shared our story, searched for housing leads, or supported Pup Pup—your kindness means more than you know.
