On the morning of June 5th our mom woke up in a lot of pain was throwing up and wasn’t able to keep anything down or use the bathroom. She ended up calling an ambulance as I was on the way to her apartment and she went into the emergency room. Because of her weight , malnutrition, and overall health the pain medication knocked her out. During that time the doctors were able to run tests and found that she had diverticulitis with an abscess as well as her colon ruptured and she was sepsis with major infections .
Due to not being awake nor aware she was unable to make any medical decisions, and at that point kelsey and I were giving a couple of options but they were all limited based on further testing. At around 12:30am on June 6th test results determined that mom needed surgery in order to live .
The surgery took about 5 hours and she is okay as of the morning after the surgery, lost part of her intestines and did have a colostomy bag put in place due to her color rupturing. She was on and off alert however around 6pm on June 6 for the first time since she arrived at the hospital and was semi aware of what was going on but very confused.
Throughout the last month she has been on and off with motivation, getting up, eating and being stable enough to move forward however more recently with mental health diagnosis of dementia have set her back quiet a bit .
Moving forward to today July 10th she is still in the hospital and not progressing, she is unable to eat and does have a feeding tube in place for nutrition , she has had fluids around her lungs drains multiple times that continues to come back and we have been told it’s a sign of heart failure and that Because she isn’t moving it will only keep coming back . Not only is her physical health declining her mental health is no longer stable. She has continued to be very confused , very concerned and was deemed unable to make sound decisions. . Tomorrow July 11th Kelsey and I are meeting with the palliative care team to discuss the next steps in our mom’s life as the hospital has done everything they can do for her and unfortunately she is not stable enough for any other care at this time .
We’re told that this isn’t the end necessarily , it’s the want to live and the want to eat that she needs if she’s going to ever make it out , however we aren’t giving up and are trying to pay all her bills and get all her stuff taking care of so if there is any chance we don’t lose her she doesn’t have to worry about past due bills.
Please keep her in your thoughts , she has requested any visitors or communication come through Kelsey or I first . This has been an extremely challenging time for us and we appreciate the respect and time my mother needs in order to hopefully health. Thank you .
