Support Our Mission: Homes for Harmons

To my family and friends:

What picture comes to mind when you think of Jamaica? The first thing that comes to my mind is a tropical paradise – beautiful beaches and blue waters. In truth, unlike what you see in the travel brochures, the reality of life on this island is anything but paradise. It is an impoverished, majority-world country where most of its residents live in unimaginable conditions. Once you move away from the tourist areas, you find people in extreme poverty, often with untreated health problems, a lack of opportunity for a quality education, and little hope of a promising future.

Thankfully, there are bright spots of hope that can be found there. One of those bright spots is a ministry called Won by One to Jamaica. This summer, I will have the opportunity to serve for a week on a mission trip with this organization. My church – Mecklenburg Community Church – will be taking a team of students and adults to the small village of Harmons, which is in a rural, mountainous area of the island.

While we are there for the week, we will be partnering with the Jamaicans in Harmons to construct one or two houses for families the ministry has identified. It will be hot and grueling work, but so unbelievably worth it to know we’ve provided a home for a local family who previously didn’t have one. We will also get to spend time with the people of this community both throughout the days and in the evenings through visits to the “Poor House,” where many people with disabilities and those who are elderly live, as well as having fun with the children who go to school in Harmons. I am really excited about the relationships I’ll get to build through this trip, both with my other team members from Meck as well as the people in Harmons.

I am writing you to ask you to partner with me in this mission trip. I would be so grateful for your prayers – for these initial stages of preparation all the way to our travels back to the States. Please consider including me, our team, and the Jamaicans we will meet in your regular prayers. If you are willing, I am also hoping you will consider partnering with me financially.
