For nearly four decades, Hyde & Pacific Liquor and Grocery Mart has been the heart of our neighborhood. What started as a Korean immigrant family's dream in 1987 became much more than a convenience store – it's been our gathering place and community cornerstone.
The store was passed down to Christina (or Chris, as regulars call her) from her father, Han, and she continued the family tradition of treating every customer like family. After over 30 years as owner, Chris now faces having to rebuild her and her family's lives from scratch. Han originally purchased Hyde & Pacific Liquor and Grocery Mart and worked at the store until his health began failing, and ever since then, it's been a mother-daughter duo with Chris and her mother, Uni. Han passed away this year. Hyde & Pacific is where generations have shopped, where kids buy candy with allowance money, where neighbors stop in for ingredients to cook at home, for a quick heat-up meal, a pint of ice cream, and a bottle of wine to drink with dinner, and where everyone knows your name.
Now, after 38 years of service, our neighborhood institution is in crisis, and will close at the end of September.
The new property owner gave Chris only 60 days' notice to vacate with no future option for the business. To make matters worse, the new landlord is requiring Chris to continue paying rent even though she's had to resort to severely discounting prices, giving things away for free, and taking significant financial losses — all to meet the deadline. During this devastating time, Chris also lost her father Han, who had devoted decades of his life to building this neighborhood institution alongside his family. With Han gone, Chris and Uni must handle both the practicalities—closing the store and settling his estate—and the deeper challenge of preserving his memory and legacy.
Chris faces mounting costs from liquidating inventory under pressure, funeral expenses, and the emotional weight of losing both her father and her life's work simultaneously. The family that has given so much to our neighborhood needs our help during this incredibly difficult time.
Every donation dollar will go toward:
- Rent and utility fees from being asked to leave under duress
- Loss of wages and incoming revenue
- Inventory liquidation losses
- Professional business closure and junk removal costs
- Funeral expenses for Chris's father
- Helping the family through this transition. Three generations have grown and evolved in this store since 1987, including Chris's 9-year-old daughter.
- Chris and her family have been there for us for 37 years. Now it's our turn to be there for them.
"Small mom and pop businesses are the heart of what makes a neighborhood feel like home. We've celebrated with families during good times, and been here during the tough ones. Your support of local businesses doesn't just keep us going - it keeps the community spirit alive. We're going to miss you all so much." - Chris
Together, we can help Chris and her family through this difficult time. No amount is too small, and every dollar counts.
